Christine Sismondo, PhD, is the author of America Walks into a Bar: A Spirited History of Taverns and Saloons, Speakeasies and Grog Shops (OUP, 2011), a book about the history of bars in the United States. More recently, she wrote a six-part podcast series on Prohibition for Wondery’s American History Tellers. In addition to her articles on history, which she has written for the Washington Post, Maclean’s, <Slate, Atlantic, she also writes about spirits, wine, food and bar culture for the Globe and Mail and the Toronto Star. Sismondo has been covering that beat for 20 years and has received a National Magazine Award for that work. When at home in Toronto, she spends a lot of time herding cats and making a mess of her kitchen, attempting to recreate great meals she’s enjoyed at restaurants.
